Remember to Look Behind Your Ear

Hieronymus Bosch, The Conjurer

There is a creature that lives with me. I habitually feed it with egg yolks.

I boil four eggs, peel them, keep two whole for myself and remove the yolks from the other two.

These go as sacrifice to my creature.

This time it looked at me with a mix of curiosity and wonder and said: “Only one?”

I said nothing much. But I lifted my shoulders and facial features implying the naturalness of a non-standard occurrence in life.

Then I reached behind their ear and brought up another yolk, rendering it into reality.

Laughs…

“How did you do that?”

I said nothing.

But as you know the yolk was in my hand all along. They just didn’t see it.

So I grabbed the opportunity to put my hand behind their ear and perform a magic trick I have never been able to pull off so far.

Seized the moment.

Magic!

I have worked in therapeutic and coaching settings with enough people by now to notice how often it comes down to this:

There is something in our experience we ignore or avoid, something we can’t see from our current perspective. Yet it’s already there.

Sometimes my job is to notice intently, seize the moment and offer it to them.

Magic!

So next time you feel you may not be able to figure out something in life, whether a habit, an emotion or you simply forgot where you placed your phone, seize that moment.

And remember to look behind your ear.
